Future vs Present Rewards
Share
A decision-making framework shared by Shaan Puri about shifting from future-oriented to present-oriented rewards when choosing what to pursue.
Core Philosophy
- Stop doing things solely for future payoffs
- Focus on activities where the act of doing it is the reward
- Allow future benefits to be byproducts rather than primary motivators
Evolution of Personal Priorities
- Early 20s: Focused on proving oneself
- Late 20s: Money-driven ($1M, then $10M goals)
- Early 30s: Lifestyle optimization
- Maximum time
- Minimum stress
- Enough money for freedom
- Mid 30s: Authenticity and enjoyment
- Doing the "most me thing"
- Present-focused rewards
- Less concern about future payoffs
Framework Application Example: Podcast
- Initial expectation: Would lose $10-20k annually
- Comfortable with financial loss
- No exit strategy or sale plans
- Became most successful project despite lack of profit motive
- Sustainable long-term because enjoyment is immediate
Key Principles
- Question if you're doing something for present enjoyment or future rewards
- Avoid activities that "suck today" for theoretical future benefits
- Focus on what feels authentic and enjoyable in the present moment
- Be willing to accept financial losses if the activity itself is rewarding
- Look for alignment between personal interests and activities
