80/20 Impact Focus

A method for maintaining focus and getting things done by identifying and executing the highest impact activities while ignoring everything else.

Core Philosophy

  • Identify the "80/20" of any project - the one thing that will drive 80% of results
  • Focus only on that one high-impact outcome each day
  • Deliberately ignore everything else that doesn't align with the main goal

Implementation Method

  • Choose one memorable outcome for the day
    • Should be able to hold it in your head all day
    • Break it into 5 or fewer subtasks if needed
    • Example: "Get booked on other big podcasts" as the one goal
  • Ignore all other tasks and distractions
    • Don't maintain to-do lists
    • Skip low-impact administrative tasks
    • Decline requests unrelated to main goal

Task Prioritization Framework (Eisenhower Matrix)

  • Organize tasks along two axes:
    • Impact (high to low)
    • Urgency (urgent to non-urgent)
  • Focus order:
    1. Urgent + High Impact tasks first
    2. Non-urgent + High Impact tasks second
    • Most people mistakenly do urgent + low impact tasks
    • Important but non-urgent tasks often become critical if ignored too long

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Letting your brain get cluttered with multiple priorities
  • Doing urgent but low-impact tasks first
  • Neglecting important non-urgent tasks until they become emergencies
  • Getting distracted by administrative tasks that don't drive core outcomes

Real World Example

  • For podcast growth:
    • Core goal: Get more subscribers
    • One daily high-impact task to drive subscriptions
    • Ignore everything else (texts, emails, administrative tasks)
    • Focus solely on activities that directly drive subscriber growth
