Daily Pitch Deck Mentoring
Share
A story about how Shaan and his co-investor took an extremely hands-on approach to helping a startup they invested in improve their pitch deck.
"Me and my buddy Sully invested in this company - I put 50K in, he put 100K in. A couple months went by and we checked in with them after 9 months asking for the latest. They wanted to raise money and asked us for intros. We asked for their deck, but when they sent it, it sucked.
Before our scheduled call, Sully sent 3 emails in 45 minutes critiquing specific slides: 'Slide 1 this sucks, Slide 3 what is this picture this is stupid, Slide 5 present it this way, Slide 9...'
Then during the meeting he's like 'Let's open up PowerPoint right now and fix it.' He scheduled another call for 4 hours later to review the fixes, and said 'We're gonna do 2 calls a day for the next 5 days or until this deck is amazing.'
By day 4, they were just sort of beaten down. We told them not only does their deck need to change, but their business strategy needed to change too. The deck can only tell a great business story, but they didn't actually have a great business story. Our delivery wasn't the softest - I don't think they loved the calls at first, and by the end I think they were just beaten down."
