60-Second Founder Assessment
Share
A framework for quickly assessing founder potential in the first 60 seconds of meeting them, before evaluating their current business idea.
The Star Founder Assessment
- Within 60 seconds you can tell if someone is a "star" founder
- Focus on the person's potential rather than their current idea
- Stars will likely go through multiple ideas before finding success
- Better to back great founders with mediocre ideas than vice versa
Key Assessment Criteria
- Look for founders who demonstrate:
- Natural charisma and ability to communicate clearly
- Raw intelligence and quick thinking
- Drive and determination
- Ability to execute and get things done
The Three Stages of Founder Ideas
-
Dumb Idea Stage
- Early stage where ideas aren't fully formed
- Expected and normal part of the journey
- Willing to iterate and pivot
-
Kind of Dumb Idea Stage
- Ideas starting to improve but still need work
- Shows progress in thinking and market understanding
-
Good Idea Stage
- Finally landing on something promising
- Result of learning and iteration
Investment Strategy
- Invest in relationship early, even during "dumb idea" phase
- Goal is to be involved when they reach their good idea
- Back the person, not just the current concept
- Look for signs they'll "do shit" and figure things out over time
Red Flags
- Founders too attached to their first idea
- Unwilling to iterate or pivot
- Lack of natural leadership qualities
- Poor communication skills
- Unable to attract talent or resources
Success Indicators
- Ability to attract and influence others
- History of execution and getting things done
- Quick learning and adaptation
- Strong communication skills
- Natural leadership qualities
The key is identifying founders who will eventually succeed, even if their current idea isn't perfect. Focus on their potential rather than their current concept.
