One Metric Per Person
Share
A management approach focused on giving each team member a single, clear priority to drive focus and results. Based on Peter Thiel's management style at PayPal.
Core Philosophy
- Every team member should have exactly one priority at any time
- If someone tries to discuss anything besides their priority, ignore it
- Simplifies management and creates clear accountability
- Makes performance evaluation straightforward
Implementation Steps
-
Create a "Big Bets" document annually for each business/project that outlines:
- 3-4 major bets/initiatives for the year
- A "No List" of things explicitly not being pursued
- Clear rationale for each bet and non-bet
-
For each team member:
- Assign one clear priority from the big bets
- Turn it into a memorable "slogan" or simple statement
- Repeat it frequently (100+ times in first 3 months)
- Use it as the sole basis for bonuses and performance reviews
- Reference it whenever discussing priorities
Benefits
- Creates extreme clarity on expectations
- Prevents dilution of focus
- Makes it easy to say no to distractions
- Aligns compensation with key priorities
- Reduces management overhead
Communication Approach
- Make priorities memorable like commercial slogans
- Constantly reinforce the single priority
- Be explicit about what won't be done
- Use the priority as a filter for all discussions
- Leave conversations that aren't about the priority
Key Insight
The framework trades off comprehensiveness for clarity and focus. While potentially extreme, it creates unmistakable alignment around what matters most.
