Twitch HubSpot Side Project Clash

A story about how Shaan and Sam experienced different corporate cultures regarding their podcast work while at Twitch and HubSpot respectively.

"Your HubSpot experience is the opposite of my Twitch experience. You got acquired and they're like 'go on cowboy, do your thing out there.' They love it - they're like 'oh Sam vaguely offended one tenth of the population today, ah what a guy.' They engage, they like the podcast, all that stuff.

Whereas when I was doing this stuff at Twitch, they were like 'does this guy work here? Why is he just on Twitter and leaves in the middle of the day to record at a studio?' My Twitter personality was a constant source of annoyance for like 70% of the management team there. 30% I think liked it or appreciated it - the secure people were just like 'ah it's cool, do your thing man.' But 70% of people were just silently like 'f this guy, this guy is no good.'

The big difference is your job is to build this podcast. My job was to do something else - I was building the podcast as a side thing. I would record these at noon because that's when everybody else at Twitch goes to the cafeteria to eat lunch. I would just walk outside - your office was right across the street and we built the studio there. Instead of eating lunch I would go do the podcast, then when I got back I would grab a bite and take it to my desk. That's how I kind of did it on the side, whereas your job is to do this thing, which is quite different."
