Quest's Billion-Dollar Family Mission
Share
A story about how Quest protein bars became a billion-dollar success after starting as a mission to help an overweight family member.
"Tom Bilyeu spoke at our event Hustle Con. This was actually one of the first D2C kind of home runs. They bootstrapped this company and within 5 years sold it for a billion dollars.
Tom's mom or someone in his family was really overweight, and he wanted to create a low glycogen food for his overweight family member. He said 'I just need it to taste good so we can replace candy.' He creates this thing and revenue starts doubling every month. Eventually they sell it for a billion dollars when they get to $100 million in revenue.
It's quite controversial because it has sucralose and they put a lot of fiber in it. The protein isn't the best quality and it has palm oil, so health nuts don't like it. But what makes Quest bars amazing is they're in every store - if you go to a 7-11 or a gas station, they're gonna have Quest bars. Whereas a lot of the other stuff isn't as convenient."
