Outcomes Before Career Paths

A framework for choosing your career path by first defining your desired life outcomes, then working backwards to find the right path - rather than following "safe" conventional paths.

Core Philosophy

  • Traditional "safe" paths aren't actually safe if they don't lead to your desired outcomes
  • Most people choose paths that sound good to others (parents, peers, society) without examining if it aligns with their goals
  • Success requires getting clear on what you want first, then finding paths that actually lead there

How to Define Your Path

  • Start by getting crystal clear on desired outcomes:

    • Lifestyle preferences (work schedule, location flexibility)
    • Financial goals (target income/wealth levels)
    • Day-to-day enjoyment (types of work you find engaging)
    • Work-life balance priorities
  • Research and sample potential paths:

    • Shadow professionals in different fields
    • Study the lifestyle of senior people in each path
    • Understand the true day-to-day reality, not just the surface perception
    • Evaluate if the "winning outcome" in that path matches your goals

Evaluating "Safe" vs "Risky" Paths

  • Traditional safe paths (doctor, lawyer, consultant, etc) aren't actually safe if:

    • The day-to-day work doesn't align with your interests
    • The ceiling doesn't match your financial goals
    • The lifestyle conflicts with your priorities
    • The path is highly repetitive when you value variety
  • Alternative paths may be "safer" if:

    • You genuinely enjoy the work (makes it sustainable long-term)
    • The potential upside aligns with your goals
    • You're willing to commit 10-15 years
    • Multiple attempts/iterations are possible

Key Success Factors

  • Get clear on your actual desired outcomes first
  • Don't blindly follow conventional "safe" paths
  • Evaluate paths based on alignment with your goals
  • Consider both short-term and long-term implications
  • Be willing to take calculated risks that align with your objectives
  • Focus on paths you'll enjoy enough to stick with long-term
