Mayweather's Contract Buyout Success
Share
A story about how Floyd Mayweather transformed from a regular boxer to a business empire by betting on himself and vertically integrating his boxing operation.
"Floyd Mayweather has an amazing bet on yourself story. Boxers in general and UFC fighters make basically nothing, with one or two exceptions. Boxers can make $10-20 million in a fight, doing that once or twice a year - that seemed like the top.
Mayweather looked at it and said 'Who is making all this money? I see the crowd is full of people and the pay-per-view numbers are huge, but where does the money go?' The reality was the money went to promoters, cable companies, and all these other people.
So he decided to bet on himself. He spent $750,000 out of pocket and bought himself out of Top Rank, which was the promoter that promoted Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. He starts Mayweather Promotions and vertically integrates the business. He's not just the talent - he's the production for the show, collecting live gate revenue, paying the other fighter, owning piece of pay-per-view, making money on every hot dog sold in the venue, making money on merch.
Because of that, when he does fights like Manny Pacquiao or Conor McGregor, he's pulling in between $250-400 million himself per fight. He 20x'd what he could make by betting on himself and building that brand. Then he created associated brands like The Money Team clothing line instead of promoting other clothing lines.
He changed his brand from Pretty Boy Floyd to Floyd Money Mayweather. He knew people would hate it, but he'd do hateable things like posting photos of himself at dinner tables stacked with cash instead of food. In reality, though, he never smoked, never drank, and trained at 3 in the morning - he was an extremely well-conditioned, disciplined athlete."
