Thiel's One Task Rule
Share
Peter Thiel implemented a strict one-responsibility system at PayPal to maintain focus and drive results. Here's how it worked.
Core Philosophy
- Every employee gets assigned exactly one critical responsibility
- By definition, anything outside that one thing is considered non-important
- Focus is treated as the highest priority value
Implementation
- Each team member had one "big thing" they were responsible for
- The list could only be one item - no exceptions
- If someone tried discussing anything outside their assigned focus:
- Thiel would literally leave the room
- He would completely ignore conversations about non-assigned topics
- His logic: "We decided what's important, so by definition this is not important"
Why It Works
- Creates extreme clarity on priorities
- Eliminates distractions and scope creep
- Forces deep focus on what matters most
- Makes accountability crystal clear
- Particularly effective for young/early-stage companies
Note: The speaker mentions this is an anecdotal story about Thiel, but believes it's directionally accurate and represents an important operating principle for early-stage companies.
