Share
A framework for understanding different types of luck and how they can be leveraged for success in business and life.
The Four Levels of Luck
-
Blind Luck (Level 1)
- Pure chance with no control or influence
- Examples: Being born in a certain country, winning a raffle
- Can't be counted on or influenced
-
Fortune Favors the Bold (Level 2)
- Luck through motion and action
- Increases odds by expanding surface area of opportunity
- Creates chance encounters through activity
- Key phrase: "Never heard of someone stumbling onto something good while sitting down"
-
Chance Favors the Prepared Mind (Level 3)
- Ability to recognize opportunity others miss
- Requires preparation and knowledge to spot patterns
- Examples:
- Investors reviewing 100 deals to recognize exceptional metrics
- Discovery of penicillin through prepared observation
- Benefits from accumulated experience and expertise
-
Reputational Luck (Level 4)
- Luck finds you through reputation
- Opportunities come because of who you are known to be
- Examples:
- Best deep sea diver getting treasure hunting opportunities
- Kevin Rose getting Twitter investment opportunity due to reputation
- Built through consistent demonstration of expertise
The Four Types of Risk
-
Mediocrity Risk
- Not failing completely but settling for "just okay"
- Wastes time on things that aren't great
- More dangerous than outright failure
-
Safety Risk
- Risk of not taking enough risk
- Playing it too safe can put long-term goals at risk
- Evaluate if current path leads to desired outcome
-
Eyes Wide Shut Risk
- Assuming something is safe when it isn't
- Not recognizing hidden dangers
- Example: 2008 housing crisis
-
Business Risk Categories
- Market Risk: Will anyone want this?
- Execution Risk: Can we improve/operate this?
- Technical Risk: Can we build this?
- Important to identify which type you're taking
