SBF's Beanbag Billionaire Facade

A profile of Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the crypto billionaire founder of FTX, known for his modest lifestyle and aggressive business approach.

"Even now he lives like he drives a old beat up Honda or some shit like that. He sleeps in the office on a giant beanbag. There's tons of pictures of him just passed out on a beanbag in front of his desk. It's actually like two beanbags - upper body on one, feet on the other. It creates this tiny little SBF bridge in between them.

He's vegan and practices effective altruism. His goal is to make as much money as possible so he can give away as much money as possible. That's his philosophy - earn to give is the name of it.

When they wanted to do marketing, he called somebody I know who did the athlete rights. The guy gets on a call and asks 'What are your goals with sports sponsorships?' SBF goes 'How much does it cost to have the Yankees stadium renamed to FTX stadium?' The guy says 'I don't think that's even for sale.' SBF responds 'Okay what about every ad inside the stadium?' When told maybe they should start smaller, SBF just says 'I think it would be most effective if we go get Tom Brady and Steph Curry and Yankees. You go do that and tell me when you have them.' Name your price - and guess what? They got all of them.

He's not like very missionary about crypto. He's just sort of like 'I'm an effective altruist trying to give away as much money as possible, so I need to make as much money as possible. People wanted an effective trading platform for crypto, I'll build that.'"
