Work Evolution Across Generations
Share
Shaan shares a reflection about how work has evolved across three generations in his family.
"My grandfather worked at a chemical plant - to him work was you come to the factory where ingredients are getting processed, there's fumes everywhere, and there's a shift supervisor. That's what work is.
If he saw what my dad did, which was go to work with a briefcase, there's a computer on your desk, you sit in an office, you take phone calls, or get on a flight and go to a business meeting where you're gonna shake hands and do a paper contract deal - that was unrecognizable and looks much less serious than the chemical plant.
Then to my dad, what I do - he's like 'are you ever gonna work?' I'm sitting in front of my phone, talking, and he's like 'who's listening to this? You get paid for this?' If I get a bunch of views then yes. He's like 'no you're just messing around on YouTube.'
Our version of work is unrecognizable to our parents. I have two little kids now and I'm like whatever they're gonna do is probably gonna blow my mind - it's gonna be so unrecognizable. But every generation does that."
