Hubspot's Hidden Coaching
Share
Sam Parr shares a story about how his wife helped him negotiate during the Hubspot acquisition of his company.
"When we sold the company to Hubspot, I was negotiating my salary. My wife was in the room but she was on the other side of the computer screen so they couldn't see her. When they told me a number, I was like 'Yeah, whatever, whatever's cool.'
My wife was on the other end like 'What the fuck, shut up!'
This reminded me of when I got a speeding ticket during the pandemic in rural Kansas. I was doing the court hearing over Zoom, and I had a lawyer friend on speakerphone listening in. She would text me what to say to fight the ticket. The judge was like 'Wow you really know what you're talking about.' I was like 'Oh yeah, you know, I just really didn't think I did anything wrong.'
You really just need that for salary negotiations - have someone there listening to the Zoom and saying 'alright now say this, now say this' and then just give me half of the additional earnings you got from the negotiation."
