$75K Bourbon's Empty Promise

Nick Huber shares a story about buying expensive bourbon and realizing material things don't matter without people to share them with.

"I ordered a lot of high-end bourbon lately. The most expensive bottle was $75,100. I have zero life overhead - I could cut my spending to $5,000 a month and put my kids in daycare and pay for my house payment which is $1,200. I've avoided the big expenses like the big house, the plane, the big cars.

So I splurge on some little things that sound huge and obnoxious but aren't really that obnoxious. I got some really nice bourbon, some special bottles. Then I got them, I'm looking at them in my bar, and I sent a text to 4 of my boys saying 'Hey come over let's try some bourbon' - and nobody could come over.

The next morning I got up and looked at it, opened one of the nicer bottles, poured a little bit myself and thought 'None of this matters.' It's all about the people and how they feel about you, whether they care about you, whether they respect you, how you can help them become better versions of themselves.

It hit me when I was looking at that bourbon - my dad loves bourbon but he's 7 hours away, my brother's 9 hours away, Sam Parr doesn't drink alcohol. The stuff is really just a distraction."
