Shackleton's Morale Leadership

Sam Parr shares a story about Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition and the leadership lessons learned from it.

"In the early 1900s, between 1900-1925, it was called the heroic era of arctic expedition. They had steam engines and combustible engines, but still had sails and no radios. These guys would sail from England all the way down to Antarctica to explore and map the southern part of the world.

Ernest Shackleton led an expedition of 30 people and they got stuck in Antarctica. It became a 2-2.5 year expedition just to survive. What I learned reading that book is the people you're leading mimic the behavior of the leader.

For a while, I was against this 'we're gonna change the world' mentality, and thought I should be vulnerable and let people know when things aren't going well. But after reading that book, I realized no - you have to convince everyone that it's gonna be okay no matter what. The pack mimics the behavior of the leader."
