Low-Ball Guess Strategy

A strategy for getting people to share information by intentionally guessing low numbers, allowing them to correct you with the real (higher) figures.

Core Strategy

  • Always guess lower than what you think the actual number is
  • Creates opportunity for other person to correct you upward
  • Helps avoid deflating someone's exciting news/accomplishment
  • Makes the other person feel good about sharing the real number

Psychology Behind It

  • People enjoy correcting others upward
  • Gives the other person a "win" in the conversation
  • Allows them to exceed expectations
  • Creates better social dynamics than guessing too high

Example Implementation

  • When someone asks you to guess a number/metric:
    • Take your actual estimate
    • Cut it in half
    • Use that as your guess
  • This ensures the real number will be more impressive than your guess

Benefits

  • Maintains positive social dynamics
  • Avoids awkward situations where you overestimate
  • Lets the other person feel good about sharing their news
  • Creates better conversation flow
  • Makes you appear humble while being strategic
