Low-Ball Guess Strategy
Share
A strategy for getting people to share information by intentionally guessing low numbers, allowing them to correct you with the real (higher) figures.
Core Strategy
- Always guess lower than what you think the actual number is
- Creates opportunity for other person to correct you upward
- Helps avoid deflating someone's exciting news/accomplishment
- Makes the other person feel good about sharing the real number
Psychology Behind It
- People enjoy correcting others upward
- Gives the other person a "win" in the conversation
- Allows them to exceed expectations
- Creates better social dynamics than guessing too high
Example Implementation
- When someone asks you to guess a number/metric:
- Take your actual estimate
- Cut it in half
- Use that as your guess
- This ensures the real number will be more impressive than your guess
Benefits
- Maintains positive social dynamics
- Avoids awkward situations where you overestimate
- Lets the other person feel good about sharing their news
- Creates better conversation flow
- Makes you appear humble while being strategic
