Success Status Paradox
Share
Shaan Puri shares observations about how successful people present themselves differently on social media compared to those still seeking success, particularly noting the paradox in how they signal status.
-
The Status Signaling Paradox:
- Successful people ("ballers") try to appear like regular people
- Less successful people try to appear more successful than they are
-
Real Example: Dan Gilbert (Billionaire)
- Downplays success in bio: "family man, retired pizza delivery driver"
- Only subtly references major achievements (Cavs ownership, Quicken Loans)
- Uses counter-signaling to appear more relatable
-
Contrast with Status Seekers:
- Overemphasize minor achievements
- List multiple impressive-sounding titles (investor, entrepreneur, innovator, philanthropist)
- Highlight questionable accomplishments ("Forbes 30 under 30 finalist")
- Name-drop unknown companies
-
Key Observations:
- The harder someone tries to appear successful, the more it reveals they're still climbing
- No bio can be a power move: "my name speaks for itself"
- Both groups are actually signaling:
- Rich trying to say "I'm just like you"
- Climbers trying to say "I'm bigger than I am"
-
The Tell:
- Over-signaling success usually indicates someone hasn't achieved it yet
- True success often leads to understated presentation
