Penny Hoarder's $60M Content

A story about how Kyle Taylor built The Penny Hoarder into a $60M business through affiliate marketing and content about saving money.

"Kyle started The Penny Hoarder when he was poor and didn't have money. He would blog about ways he tried to pay his bills, like driving for Uber or coupon clipping. He discovered that whenever someone read his article about driving for Uber, he would make $2,000 per Uber driver who signed up.

He realized this was a great opportunity, so he started blogging about all the ways to save money or make extra money - things like filling out surveys to make a few bucks. His audience was mostly middle America moms who would read these articles, sign up for the services, and he would get an affiliate fee.

He scaled this from zero to $60 million in sales, completely bootstrapped, in about 6 years. But then a company called Fluent Media, which is publicly traded, saw how well he was doing. They completely ripped off his website, created a similar name, copied the articles, and drove Facebook traffic to them. They could get clicks for pennies and make 20 cents per person who signed up.

Kyle ended up suing them after discovering they had hired one of Penny Hoarder's employees to learn their exact methods. The lawsuit is still ongoing."
