Shark Tank Traffic Surge

Josh Hix shares the massive impact Shark Tank had on their website traffic when their episode aired in April 2014.
"At the time, we typically had about 50 people on average on our site at any given time. We aired on a Friday night, and we had a big party in the office with TVs up on the walls showing Google Analytics. Within about 3 seconds of our segment starting, the traffic went from 50 to 50,000 concurrent users.
The site crashed immediately. We had a backup static page with just email capture, but that only lasted 6 seconds before crashing too - though it managed to collect 13,000 emails in that brief window.
We were on Heroku at the time, and they told us it was the single biggest database spike they'd ever seen. This really shows how massive Shark Tank is as a platform - when we were on, it was going into 11 million households on Friday night, which is like 10% of the households in the US, and that's before Hulu, reruns, syndication, and DVR."
