Four Executive Communication Types

A framework for effectively communicating with executives, based on a system shared by Emmett Shear (former Twitch CEO).

The Four Types of Executive Communications

  1. FYI Updates
  • Simply informing about decisions already made
  • No approval needed, just keeping executives in the loop
  • Format: "Here's my decision, FYI"
  1. Approval Requests
  • Used for risky or expensive decisions
  • Seeking explicit permission before proceeding
  • Format: "Here's what I think we should do, do I have your approval?"
  1. Help Requests
  • When you're stuck and need guidance
  • Acknowledging uncertainty and seeking input
  • Format: "I don't know what to do, could you help me?"
  1. Progress Updates
  • Following up on previous discussions
  • Providing status reports on ongoing initiatives
  • Format: "Last time we talked about X, here's where we're at now"

Key Implementation Notes
