OpenAI Equity Surge
Share
Sam Parr shares a story about how much an OpenAI employee's equity has appreciated in value.
"I have a friend that works at OpenAI and he was able to sell some of his shares. He told me 'Remember when I told you I was starting to work there and how much money I thought I could make if things went well? Add a zero to that number.' And that's just from selling a percentage of his shares.
According to Business Insider, the average all-in pay was about $800,000. If you're making $800,000 three years ago, that's $400K cash and $400K equity. Their value has gone up about 10x in 3 years, so that $400K a year in equity is now worth $4 million a year. If you've been there for 3 years, that's $12 million.
And that's not even all their shares, because they're known for paying people even more now that there's more competitors. This person was around the 1,000th employee - they didn't even have to invent artificial intelligence or pull off a miracle to get incredibly wealthy."
