Oklahoma Racial Bullying Incident

A story about racial bullying that Shaan Puri's sister experienced in kindergarten in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"My sister and I were born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which was not the most open-minded and racially friendly place. When my sister was in kindergarten, students would draw a picture of a pig, write her name on it, and cover it in brown mud. They would give it to the teacher, and the teacher laughed. My sister, who was about 6 years old, vividly remembers the teacher looking at this and laughing, saying 'no no no put it away' but being involved in it.

When she went to my mom, she asked 'why can't we be white?' She was just trying to understand as a kid - why am I different, what does that mean, why do other people think we're worse than them? I personally never experienced that because I luckily moved out of Oklahoma when I was really young and went to different places where it was less so."
