Network Access Beats Advice
Share
Shaan Puri and others discuss their perspective on the reality of "value-add investing" and share a framework for successful angel investing. They believe most promised investor value-add is overstated, and the real value comes from network access and pattern recognition.
-
The Value-Add Myth:
- Most investor promises to help with strategy, messaging, and deck reviews rarely materialize into material impact
- Even when investors have relevant experience and skills, founders rarely take advantage of the offered help
- Sam Parr (as founder) preferred investors to stay hands-off unless socializing
-
Ryan's Investment Framework ("Ikigai for Investing"):
- Success comes from intersection of three elements:
- Natural curiosity about the space
- Being well-networked in the industry
- Strong business fundamentals
- Investments outside this framework (like healthcare without industry knowledge) performed worse
- Best returns came from investments like Coinbase, Warby Parker, Uber where all three elements aligned
- Success comes from intersection of three elements:
-
Shaan's Framework Modification:
- Strong fundamentals and rapid growth can drive the other elements
- Curiosity often follows after seeing impressive performance
- Being well-networked matters more for deal access than operational help
- The value is getting into good deals early through network, not helping post-investment
-
Investment Strategy Considerations:
- Better to make fewer, larger investments than many small ones
- Small check sizes ($10-15k) across many deals (30+) creates too much overhead
- Need to consider time spent on sourcing, meetings, and portfolio management
