Mass Personalization Era
Share
Shaan Puri believes we're entering an era of "mass personalization" for software, mirroring what happened with content over the past 15-20 years. Just as news feeds transformed media from one-size-fits-all to hyper-personalized experiences, AI is now enabling software to be built for individual needs rather than broad audiences.
The Content Personalization Precedent:
- The Old Model:
- 20 years ago, content needed mass appeal (newspapers, TV shows)
- Friends finale had 55 million viewers—more than anything gets now
- Everyone consumed the same thing
- The Transformation:
- Supply exploded—everyone became a creator (bloggers → tweets → images → videos)
- Algorithms enabled automatic editorial curation based on individual signals
- No human editor needed to choose what goes on your front page
- The Result:
- Shaan and his wife have completely different content tastes
- He wants NBA highlights; she wants oddly satisfying crochet videos
- Algorithms deliver exactly what each person wants
Personal Software Revolution:
- "Vibe Coding" Concept:
- You roughly describe what you want
- The AI makes it, you refine it ("yeah but actually I wanted this")
- Like ordering at a table where the chef keeps iterating until you get what you want
- Beyond Generic Tools:
- Traditional software had to appeal to everybody a little bit
- Now you can build highly personalized software—not just "Sam who likes business biographies" but "Sam who likes business biographies and is going through these specific challenges right now"
- Vibe Coding for Everything:
- This isn't just for apps—it's happening for music, code, and other skills
- You don't need to know Ableton, Fruity Loops, or what a MIDI is
Background Workers & Proactive AI:
- Autonomous Assistance:
- AI agents that constantly work for you in the background
- ChatGPT's Pulse feature proactively searches and writes about things you care about
- Tools like Nebula (by Furqan) that read Slack/Gmail and automatically do work based on what's being said
- Context-Aware Automation:
- Connected to your calendar → automatically creates prep docs for meetings
- Connected to GitHub → summarizes code changes without being asked
- The system figures out what to do based on what's going on
- Getting Smarter Over Time:
- Feed learnings back into the system
- Create a "README file" of what resonates with you
- The system checks against your preferences for future outputs
Practical Example:
- Shaan created a content strategy for My First Million 19 minutes before recording:
- Asked for analysis of what makes their content work
- Got titles like "How to make a million dollars so fast your accountant gets nervous"
- Received a full one-month content plan with video essays, thumbnail strategies, topic selection
- AI offered to script videos and create thumbnail ideas
- Just keep saying "yeah, have at it, knock yourself out"
The Core Shift:
- People voted with their eyes—they don't want mass-appeal content anymore
- We had better options and chose personalization
- The same transformation is now happening for software
- It's not nostalgic to want the old model back—personalization is what people actually want
