Switzer Breaks Marathon Barrier

Sam Parr shares a historical story about Katherine Switzer breaking gender barriers in marathon running.

"Katherine Switzer - you probably don't know who she is, but there's this famous picture of a woman running a marathon with a priest pushing her out of the road. For a long time, women were not allowed to run marathons. There was no such thing as women in the Olympics - they thought women were too weak to run.

This woman came along, I think it was in the seventies, and she starts running this marathon. There's this famous picture of this guy pushing her out of the street. That signals to all women 'No, f*** this, you can do it.' If you look up 'marathon woman push' you'll see this famous picture.

This moment represented a significant breakthrough for women's rights in sports."
