Take Personal Responsibility

Pat Brown discusses how to approach major global problems and the mindset needed to create meaningful solutions, particularly in the context of sustainable food production.

Core Philosophy on Problem-Solving

  • Don't assume others are working on big problems
  • If no one appears to be solving it, likely no one is
  • Personal responsibility is key - it's your job as much as anyone else's
  • Big problems usually represent business opportunities

The Food Production Challenge

  • Current animal-based food system is environmentally destructive
  • Occupies about half of Earth's non-ice/water covered land
  • Produces more greenhouse gases than all transportation combined
  • Responsible for 90%+ of Amazon deforestation
  • Cannot be solved through moral persuasion or dietary changes

Why Traditional Solutions Don't Work

  • People won't voluntarily give up meat consumption
    • Even committed environmentalists continue eating meat
    • Food from animals is essential to quality of life for billions
    • Changing lifelong dietary habits is extremely difficult
  • Can't solve through hunting/gathering
    • Would deplete all wild animals within months
    • Current meat consumption requires industrial scale

Solution Framework

  • Focus on better production methods, not behavior change
  • Must create products that consumers decisively prefer based on:
    • Taste
    • Nutrition
    • Affordability
    • Convenience
  • Success requires exceeding, not just matching, traditional products
  • Let market forces drive adoption
  • Similar to technology transitions (like horse to locomotive)
    • Once new technology catches up, improvement potential is unlimited
    • Old technology (animals) can't improve significantly

Business Approach

  • $1.5 trillion market opportunity
  • Requires market-based solution
  • Focus on making superior products rather than moral arguments
  • Goal: Replace world's most destructive technology by 2035
  • Create most delicious, nutritious, affordable alternatives
