Capability Meets Opportunity Size
Share
Shaan Puri and Sam Parr discuss how success is influenced by both individual capability and the size of the opportunity they pursue. They argue that exceptional founders would likely succeed in any field, but the magnitude of their success largely depends on which opportunity they choose to pursue.
-
Success Probability vs Magnitude:
- Highly capable individuals have 90%+ chance of success in any field
- They would likely be "top of their field" regardless of industry
- Would make millions over their career in most scenarios
- But becoming a billionaire requires both skill AND the right opportunity
-
Opportunity Size Matters:
- Some ventures have inherently lower ceilings ("Level 6 opportunities")
- Example: Meetup founder had "Level 10 hustle, Level 10 skill, Level 6 opportunity"
- Facebook was inherently a larger opportunity than Meetup
- The era you're born in affects available opportunities
- Today's tech enables massive scale
- 100 years ago, even exceptional people might just be "best blacksmith in town"
-
Founder Selection Process:
- Great founders don't always pick the best opportunities initially
- Example: Zuckerberg thought Wirehog (file transfer) might be bigger than Facebook
- Success often comes from recognizing and pivoting to bigger opportunities
- It's not about analyzing 100 opportunities upfront and picking perfectly
-
Examples of Opportunity Impact:
- David Karp (Tumblr) - brilliant founder but company eventually shut down
- Scott Heiferman (Meetup) - amazing founder but company had limited growth potential
- These cases are like "riding Tour de France with a flat tire" - needlessly difficult path
