Ask Why Exercise

Most decisions people avoid reversing aren't actually irreversible - fear is what makes them feel permanent. Here's how to identify and overcome what's really holding you back.

The real barrier to reversing decisions

  • People find it harder to reverse decisions than they think
  • The difficulty isn't the decision itself - it's fear masquerading as practical concerns
  • Adults use code words for fear: "stress," "discomfort," "uncertainty"
  • If you say "I'm stressed," you're really saying "I'm afraid"

The "Ask Why" exercise

  • Keep asking "why" about your concerns until you hit the real reason
  • Example progression:
    • "Why are you stressed?" → Things might go wrong
    • "Then what?" → People won't like me
    • "Then what?" → You're afraid of rejection, embarrassment, humiliation, or failure
  • Fear is always underneath - one of those four things

Common fears that trap people

  • Fear of looking stupid
  • Fear of the unknown being worse than current situation
  • Fear of being alone or having nothing better
  • Fear that "what if I quit this job and the other thing's not better"
  • Fear that "what if I break up with this person but there's nobody else"

The discomfort vs. uncertainty trap

  • Tim Ferriss principle: "People would rather live in discomfort than uncertainty"
  • Known pain feels safer than unknown possibilities
  • People tolerate ongoing pain to avoid the uncertainty of change
  • This keeps them stuck in situations they know they want to leave

How to break free

  • Recognize that stress is just fear with a different name
  • Be honest about what you're actually afraid of
  • Understand that lower tolerance for pain can actually help
    • "I have less tolerance for pain, so I just make a decision - maybe the uncertainty is less pain"
  • The key is honesty about your fears, not toughness in enduring discomfort

Why people don't reverse decisions

  • Not because decisions are truly irreversible
  • Because they're afraid of:
    • Looking stupid
    • The alternative being worse
    • Being alone or having nothing
    • Feeling the pain of uncertainty
  • They choose known pain over unknown possibilities
