Inner Voice Directs Life

Shaan Puri believes that the most important voice in your life is the one inside your head—the one nobody else can hear. This inner voice acts as the director of your life's movie, telling you where to stand, what to say, and how to react. Developing and trusting this voice is crucial, though it takes time and intentional practice.

Key Points:

  • The Inner Voice as Life's Director:

    • The voice in your head is shaping you more than any external voice
    • It directs your life's movie—deciding where you stand, what you say, what you do next, and how you react
    • You want "Spielberg up there" or "Scorsese" or "Tarantino"—you want this to be a great movie
  • Choosing Your Most Important Voice:

    • Ask yourself: whose voice matters most? Your mom? Teachers? Boss? Society? The media?
    • In reality, your own opinion of yourself should matter more than anyone else's opinion of you
    • Easier said than done, but it's a weak muscle worth working on
  • Developing Your Inner Voice:

    • Decide what kind of movie you're trying to have—a tragedy? A thriller? A romantic comedy?
    • Develop your taste: What do you admire? What do you think is not cool?
    • Practice doing what your inner voice says, even when it's uncomfortable
  • Building Strength Through Action:

    • Notice moments where other voices say X but your voice says Y
    • Go with Y—do it even if it's uncomfortable
    • That's you getting stronger, becoming the person for whom this is the default
    • Do this over a number of years
  • Motion Over Direction:

    • His dad's wisdom: "Sometimes life is about motion not direction"
    • Life is like standing on a foggy beach—you can't see where paradise is
    • You have two options: stand there waiting for fog to clear, or take your crappy boat and start paddling
    • Once you're in motion, it's much easier to change direction
    • You might see it's not this way, it's actually that way—and you can shift course
  • Real Example - The Sushi Restaurant Decision:

    • Quitting his job to work at a sushi restaurant was a moment of resistance between inner and outer voices
    • Everyone thought it was silly, but his dad noticed he was "switched on"—energized, motivated, developing skills
    • His dad said: "I think it's a terrible idea, but I think you should do it"
    • The motion mattered more than whether the direction was perfect
    • His dad was sure he'd figure out the direction at some point because of all the motion
  • The Cost of Standing Still:

    • The scariest thing in life is standing there and realizing 80-90 years later you didn't move at all
    • You just sat down and stayed there
