McFarland's Prison Consulting

Sam Parr shares a story about meeting up with Billy McFarland (of Fyre Festival fame) after interviewing him on their podcast.

"Billy was right down the street from where I was visiting family, so I texted him to say thanks for coming on the podcast. He asked if I wanted to hang out right then, so we went and got tea since it was past 3pm and I didn't want coffee.

We talked about his family background, which I can't discuss, and prison stories that he mentioned a bit on the pod. I told him his idea about doing consulting was stupid and suggested he could charge startups $20,000 a month instead. He said 'Yeah, let's talk about that.'

We discussed what he should do in his situation and the mistakes he made. He expanded on what we talked about in the pod - basically that he just didn't want to look stupid, got embarrassed, and lied.

Here's my takeaway: I understand why people believed him - he's very believable and charming. I could honestly see myself becoming friends with him, but at the same time I'm thinking 'Are you doing it again?' I told him I'll be friends but won't do any business with him for a long time until he's proven himself."
