Genuine Independent Thinkers
Share
Shaan Puri and Sam Parr discuss the nature of true contrarians, distinguishing between those who self-identify as contrarians and those who demonstrate genuine independent thinking through their actions.
On True Contrarians vs. Self-Proclaimed Contrarians
-
There's a clear distinction between annoying self-proclaimed contrarians and genuine independent thinkers:
- "If you call yourself a contrarian, it's like you're not contrarian" - Sam Parr
- True contrarians wouldn't label themselves this way - the label comes from others
-
Genuine independent thinkers are identified by their unexpected approaches:
- "They're all independent thinkers meaning when I hear the stories of what they're doing I don't even wanna ask about the thing" - Shaan Puri
- The interesting question isn't what they're doing but "how did you even think of doing that thing"
-
The fascination is with their thought process:
- "How did you even get into that situation?"
- "Why were you even looking there?"
- "Why were you even deciding to do that?"
-
Real contrarians demonstrate their thinking through actions rather than self-identification
- They pursue paths others wouldn't consider
- Their approach is organic rather than performative
