Technology Adoption Phases
Share
A modern reframing of the technology adoption lifecycle, describing how new products and services spread through different consumer segments.
The Adoption Categories (In Order)
-
Freaks & Geeks (Innovators)
- First to try new things
- Often viewed as "quacks" or "weirdos"
- Willing to experiment with unproven products
-
Early Adopters ("Wannabes")
- Watch what the Freaks & Geeks are doing
- Half-heartedly copy the innovators
- More cautious but still ahead of mainstream
-
Early Majority
- "Smart reasonable person" category
- Wait for some proof before adopting
- Need more validation than early adopters
-
Late Majority
- Follow once something is well established
- More conservative in adoption
-
Laggards
- Last to adopt new technologies
- Example: "Your mom who still has newspaper subscription and AOL email"
- Highly resistant to change
Early Adopter Behavior Patterns
- Often try products once but don't become repeat customers
- Excited by "latest and greatest" offerings
- Will test multiple competing products in same category
- Sometimes convert to loyal customers for standout products
- Example: One Medical retention for 5+ years
Current Market Shift
- Health tech moving beyond early adopter phase
- Easier to build initial waitlists
- Main challenge: Converting one-time users to recurring customers
- Health becoming "cool" and mainstream
- Evidenced by popularity of Huberman, Peter Attia, Brian Johnson
- Larger segment of population now interested in health tech
