Two-Angle Success Rule
Share
A framework for creating successful podcast content based on Eric Newsom's "Diamond" theory of differentiation.
The Diamond Framework
- Need to be unique in at least 2 of 4 key attributes to create a hit podcast
- Just being different in one area typically leads to failure
- The four attributes that can be differentiated:
- What it's about (content)
- Who hosts it (expertise/personality)
- Who it's for (target audience)
- How the story is told (production/style)
Examples of Successful Two-Angle Implementation
My First Million Podcast:
- Content differentiation:
- Covers full range of entrepreneurship
- From small side hustles to billion-dollar tech ideas
- Host differentiation:
- Hosts have real entrepreneurial experience
- Engaging and entertaining personality styles
All-In Podcast:
- Expert differentiation:
- Hosts have built billion-dollar companies
- Access to high-level networks (presidents, Fortune 500 CEOs)
- Content differentiation:
- Unique insights from successful operators
- Broader worldview than typical podcasters
Common Mistakes
- Focusing on just one differentiator
- Example: "I'll make a podcast about gorillas because there are no podcasts about gorillas"
- Not having expertise or unique angle to support the concept
- Failing to pair content uniqueness with another strong differentiator
Success Indicators
- When unique content meets unique expertise
- When storytelling style meets specific audience needs
- When host authority combines with distinctive content approach
- Having at least two strong points of differentiation that complement each other
