AWS Infinidash Hoax
Share
A story about how a fake AWS product called "Infinidash" took on a life of its own in the tech community.
"AWS launches all these different products, and somebody on Twitter posted 'Oh my god, AWS Infinidash looks like a game changer.' Werner Vogels, who's their CTO, tweets out 'At the Infinidash event tonight, celebrating.' But there is no product called Infinidash - it was completely fake.
People started memeing it into existence. Someone immediately responded 'I'm buying open-dash.io so I don't get locked into AWS as an open source alternative to Infinidash.' Then Signal, the big messaging app with 50 million users, posted they were 'hiring an engineer with an emphasis on Infinidash lifecycle management.'
There were YouTube videos of Infinidash demos, people claiming to be Infinidash consultants - it just took on a life of its own. If you knew it was fake, you knew, but everybody kind of played the part. A whole bunch of people thought it was real."
