Conservative Lifetime Value
Share
A framework for determining customer acquisition costs in a subscription-based business, focusing on lifetime value calculations and conservative spending approaches.
Early Stage Customer Acquisition Strategy
- Start conservatively with spending
- Be careful with initial customer acquisition costs
- Most e-commerce businesses should aim to break even on first order
- For subscription businesses, must factor in predicted lifetime value
Lifetime Value Calculation Approach
- Base decisions on historical data when possible
- Initially make conservative estimates on order frequency
- Refine projections as customers stay longer
- Use real customer retention data to inform spending
- Adjust acquisition costs based on actual lifetime value data
E-commerce Business Model Fundamentals
- Requires significant scale to be profitable
- High fixed costs, low variable costs
- Need large volume to cover fixed expenses
- Most e-commerce businesses need substantial size to break even
- Some exceptions exist (like dropshipping models)
Competition Strategy
- Focus on customer service over competition
- Ignore competitors and focus on serving customers well
- Success comes from understanding and serving customer needs
- Large markets can support multiple successful companies
- Example: Chipotle succeeds despite many competitors by focusing on customer experience
Market Entry Timing
- Early mover advantage matters
- Most successful companies started within first 2 years of industry
- After year 3, very difficult for new entrants to gain significant scale
- Only about 6 companies achieved real scale in their space
- Many small competitors entered and exited over time
