Course Creation Time Underestimated

A story about how Shaan severely underestimated the work required to create an online course.

"I spent probably 50 to 100 hours making the content, which was way more than I thought I would do. I thought it would take an hour or two per session - that's like 15 hours of work. Instead, it was like a full day, an 8-hour day per session plus the actual teaching.

For each session, I structured it like this: First, I'd make a promise about what they'd learn by the end of the hour. Then I'd have them do a task without any instruction, like writing a cold email. After that, I'd teach them the three biggest things to improve their work, show examples, and have them redo the task. Finally, after the course, I'd spend an hour giving feedback through Loom on as many student examples as I could.

It worked pretty well but was intense for me because I'm basically performing a magic trick live - I don't know what they're going to do, so it was kind of high risk."
