Singapore's Economic Transformation
Share
A story about how Lee Kuan Yew transformed Singapore from a poor island into Asia's financial hub.
"Lee Kuan Yew took over Singapore, which was an island tropical island state in Asia. At the time it was rice paddies, poverty, like a bog. He literally took it over, had an autocracy, had total control, and he basically thought like a business person.
He asked: How do we make this the most business-friendly place? How do we optimize taxes? How do we ensure we have hyper-competent government? How do we pay government really well? How do we incentivize the whole world to manufacture and export their products from here?
He basically built it into Asia's central banking and finance hub, outside of Hong Kong. It's a pretty incredible story."
