Dishwasher to Billionaire Journey

A remarkable story about how Shahid Khan went from being a teenage immigrant dishwasher to a billionaire auto parts mogul and NFL team owner.

"This guy moved to America at age 16 from Pakistan. His first job was a dishwasher for $1.60 an hour. Today he's worth $9 billion personally.

He started by designing his own bumpers. He quit his job, took $16,000 in personal savings and a $50,000 SBA loan to create his own bumper company. While getting some small customers, his previous employer sued him for stealing trade secrets. He couldn't afford a lawyer, so he hired the cheapest one just to stall the case. Every night after business operations, he went to the library to study law to defend himself in court.

He won the case, and since the company suing him (Flexingate) was losing $50,000 a month, he ended up buying them out. He had designed this bumper that was one continuous piece, more lightweight than others. Car companies loved it because it was better for fuel efficiency, easier to manufacture, and cheaper.

To win the Suzuki contract, he hired Japanese speakers and learned their culture. He landed Suzuki, then Toyota. Today, about 30% of all cars use his bumpers. The company does billions in revenue.

He later bought the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team after trying to buy the Denver Broncos but losing out to Stan Kroenke who had right of first refusal. Even then, he faced some racism with ticket holders canceling because an American didn't own the team anymore."
