Nick Huber's Polarizing Marketing
Share
A story about how Nick Huber uses controversial "mob marketing" on Twitter to build his following, despite receiving serious threats.
"Nick does something I call mob marketing - he basically angers the mob. He's on Twitter as @sweaty_startup and he's got a big following. Some people love him and a lot of people hate him. He's one of our only friends in our group chat of people who got big on Twitter that gets death threats on a daily basis.
People will post his home address, they'll post pictures of his wife, they'll talk about how he's evil. They'll post on LinkedIn separately, not even tagging him, saying things like 'I couldn't sleep at night just thinking about how much this bothered me.'
He'll say things that definitely ruffle feathers. For example, he'll post 'I've never met someone who has purple hair and also has their life together.' Some people think it's funny, some people secretly nod along but stay quiet, and then others are offended.
Or he'll say 'I run my company with 20 people making $5 an hour in the Philippines. It's the best decision I made. I'm never hiring entitled Americans again.' Then people attack him saying 'What are you, anti-American?' and 'Do you feel good taking advantage of this labor?' He responds saying 'Well, I'm paying them double what they were making before. I'm not forcing anyone into anything.'"
