Childhood Shapes Behavior

Sam Parr shares a story about how a casual comment from his father in childhood influenced his behavior for years.
"I remember when I was 4 or 5 years old, we were at a bar or restaurant with my family. My father was drinking what must have been a jack and coke, and I saw him get the straw and take it out. I asked, 'Why are you doing that dad?'
He made some offhand comment, 'Oh men don't drink with straws.' He didn't think twice about it - he was just joking and referring to men not using dainty straws when drinking alcoholic drinks.
But for my whole life after that, I never used a straw. When I went to McDonald's or a fast food restaurant as a kid, I would always pull the straw out of the drink. It wasn't until I was older when I realized first, he just made some offhanded comment he didn't even think about, and second, he was only referring to alcohol.
This is an example of how little things happen when you're young - sometimes you notice them and sometimes you don't - but they entirely shape how you behave as an adult."
