Five Communication Layers

A communication framework from Stanford's "touchy feely" class that explains how to build deeper relationships through different levels of communication.

The Five Layers

  1. Ritual Communication
  • Basic automated greetings
  • Simple "hi/hey" exchanges
  • No real substance or meaning
  • Pure social protocol
  1. Extended Ritual
  • Slightly longer exchanges
  • Surface level "how are you" conversations
  • Not expecting real answers
  • Still mostly social protocol without depth
  1. Surface Content
  • Discussing actual topics/projects
  • Talking about what's happening
  • Focus on facts and events
  • No emotional content
  • Examples: discussing work projects, sports, news
  1. Feelings About Content
  • Sharing emotional reactions to topics
  • Expressing how you feel about situations
  • Shows vulnerability
  • Examples:
    • "I feel stressed about this project"
    • "I feel worried about this thing"
    • "I feel excited about this game"
  1. Feelings About Each Other
  • Most vulnerable level
  • Directly expressing feelings about the relationship
  • Can be positive or negative
  • Examples:
    • Expressing disappointment in expectations
    • Sharing frustration about patterns
    • Expressing joy in working together

Key Insights

  • Most communication stays in levels 1-3
  • Relationship building happens in levels 4-5
  • Two tracks in every interaction:
    • Content track: what's being discussed
    • Relationship track: connection between people
  • Levels 1-3 move content but don't build relationships
  • Levels 4-5 require vulnerability but deepen connections

Communication Tips

  • Use "I feel" instead of "I feel like"
  • Be direct about emotions
  • Move beyond surface level when trying to build relationships
  • Recognize which level you're operating at
