Live Content Commands Value

Shaan Puri shares his experience and insights about the value difference between live and recorded course content, particularly in the context of online education. His initial assumption about recorded content being superior was challenged by actual market feedback.

  • Live Content Advantages:

    • Higher perceived value from students
    • Easier to produce in the moment
    • Students prefer authentic, off-the-cuff delivery
    • More engaging than polished, recorded content
  • Recorded Content Challenges:

    • Takes significantly more time to produce upfront
    • Requires extensive planning and editing
    • Despite being more polished, students were less excited about it
    • The scalability benefit doesn't offset the initial time investment
  • Key Learning:

    • Made a pivot halfway through to switch to live format
    • Even when trying to convince students about recorded content's benefits ("it's me, it's planned, it's edited"), they still preferred live
    • The perceived authenticity of live sessions outweighed the benefits of perfectly edited content
  • Testing Process:

    • Did rehearsals with 4 younger students who couldn't afford the course
    • Used these sessions as "open mics" to refine content
    • Found immediate feedback helped identify confusion points and necessary adjustments

This experience challenged the common assumption that more polished, recorded content is automatically more valuable to students, showing that authenticity and live interaction often matter more than perfection.
