Marketing Authentic Craftsmanship

The "Tortilla Principle" is a marketing concept that focuses on identifying and highlighting the unique, high-quality aspects of your business that you might take for granted but customers would value if they knew about them.

Core Concept:

  • Businesses often fail to market their most valuable differentiators - the things they do that require "blood, sweat and tears" to achieve quality
  • These differentiators justify higher prices when properly communicated to customers

Key Examples:

  • Restaurant Example:

    • Chef insisted on trucking in fresh tortillas from Mexico every morning at $2 per tortilla (vs. 20ยข)
    • Restaurant was struggling with being "too expensive" compared to competitors
    • Problem wasn't the chef's unwillingness to compromise on quality, but failure to tell customers why the food was worth the premium
  • Watch Example:

    • Casio watches used "space-grade aluminum" and precise quartz movements
    • Company didn't highlight these features because "every watch company uses the same stuff"
    • Copywriter recognized these as compelling selling points: "space age aluminum, precise quartz movement"
  • Boot Company Example:

    • Chisos Boots founder quit his tech job and moved to Mexico for three years to apprentice in boot making
    • Company makes high-quality boots that forums describe as "the best boot on earth"
    • Despite having an incredible origin story, the website doesn't mention the founder's journey
    • Company is growing 10-15% annually but could grow much faster by properly telling its story

Application:

  • When evaluating businesses, ask: "Where are we trucking in tortillas fresh from Mexico and are we doing a good job of telling that story?"
  • The answer is almost always no - businesses take their differentiators for granted
  • Marketing should focus on why your product is fresher, more authentic, better, and worth a higher price

Marketing Opportunities:

  • Share the craftsmanship process (e.g., cutting a boot in half to show construction)
  • Tell the founder's journey and commitment to quality
  • Leverage platforms like TikTok where "niche nostalgic professions" perform well
  • Highlight authentic customer testimonials (e.g., Reddit comments praising product quality)
