Dog's Death, Child's Birth

Sam Parr shares a meaningful story about how his dog's passing coincided with his child's birth, marking a significant life transition.

"We were due around November 1st, and my dog Sid died in October. We had him for 10 days after the birth. It felt spiritual - after 15 years with him, I got exactly those many days plus 10 days with both of them together.

I knew Sid was going to die soon before the baby was born. I even wrote a fake obituary for him so I could enjoy the last 6 months with him. My wife and I were like, 'We gotta get him to the birth, we just need this one picture.' We needed to complete the picture of my transformation from moron idiot to family man.

What's powerful is that Sid saw my entire transformation. The friends you have at 21 aren't always the same friends you have at 31, but your dog in your twenties is the only one that's been there the whole time, giving you loyalty and love unconditionally. Your college friends knew the old you, your wife and current friends know the new you, but your dog is the only one who saw the entire journey.

It was the first time I've cried in probably 13 years. I never truly cared about legacy before because I thought the feeling when I die would be the same as before I was born - nothing. But when Sid died, I realized I did so much to please him, and that impacted me, which maybe impacted others. It changed my perspective on legacy."
