Three Leverage Forms
Share
A discussion on the three key forms of leverage in business and why certain types of investments may or may not make sense depending on your goals and resources.
Three Forms of Leverage
-
Human Leverage
- Using people to do work for you
- Example: Running a company where you're not involved in daily operations
- Allows scaling beyond personal capacity
-
Media Leverage
- Content that multiplies reach and impact
- Example: 1 hour podcast being listened to for thousands of hours
- Amplifies message without additional effort
-
Capital Leverage
- Money working to create more value
- Two main purposes:
- Maximizing financial returns
- Influencing world changes you care about
- Allows allocation of resources to preferred causes/companies
When Investing Doesn't Make Sense
-
Limited Capital Scenarios
- When you have very little money to invest
- Returns won't be life-changing
- Better to invest in yourself or buy time for entrepreneurial pursuits
-
Better Alternatives
- Using money for personal development
- Taking "shots on goal" with business ventures
- Building something you believe in
- Learning through direct experience
Problems with Traditional Investing
-
Common Complaints
- Too passive ("just a thing on a spreadsheet")
- Purely mechanical decision making
- Focus only on metrics like churn and acquisition costs
- Lack of excitement or meaningful impact
- Over-emphasis on financial arbitrage
- Disconnection from real-world impact
-
Better Investment Philosophy
- Focus on building over allocating
- Preference for direct involvement
- Emphasis on making meaningful difference
- Balance between financial returns and positive impact
