Three-Part Kickoff Template
Share
A kickoff document is a powerful tool for creating clarity before starting any project. It helps define goals, success metrics, and initial actions in a structured way.
Core Structure
- Three main sections that define the project scope and execution plan
- Designed to create clarity and alignment before starting
- Forces clear thinking about outcomes and potential pitfalls
Section 1: Project Definition
- Simple one-liner stating what you're trying to do
- Keeps the core mission clear and focused
- Acts as a north star for decision making
Section 2: Success Definition
- Two-tiered approach to defining success:
- Floor Win: Minimum acceptable outcome for success
- "F Yeah" Win: Stretch goal that would be exceptional
- Anti-Goals:
- Specific outcomes to avoid even if main goals are hit
- Examples:
- Not compromising ethics for success
- Not sacrificing family time
- Not burning bridges with relationships
Section 3: Power Hour
- Defines one immediate action to create momentum
- Must be completable within one hour
- Focus on actual outcomes, not just planning
- Examples:
- Make one sale (vs planning sales strategy)
- Post content that drives subscribers (vs researching content ideas)
- Take any concrete action that moves toward the goal
Key Benefits
- Creates clear alignment on objectives
- Forces thinking about both minimum and stretch goals
- Identifies potential pitfalls to avoid
- Ensures immediate action rather than just planning
- Provides a reference point for decision making
