HelloFresh Copied Blue Apron

A story about how the Samwer brothers from Germany successfully copied Blue Apron to create HelloFresh.

The Samwer brothers ran a company called Rocket Internet, which was essentially a clone factory. They had a strategy of copying successful businesses, but their most successful copy was HelloFresh. They copied Blue Apron's meal kit delivery model, and HelloFresh ended up becoming more successful than the original.

This was part of their broader strategy - they had previously cloned eBay in Germany and sold it back to eBay for $90 million in just 3 months. They tried to do the same with Groupon but got bigger than Groupon and realized "once you get huge this business sucks" so they tried to offload it. They attempted this with Zappos too, but got too big to sell back to them. While many of their copying attempts didn't work out as planned, HelloFresh stands as their most successful clone.
