Job Impact Hours Test

A story about how Shaan tested the importance of his job in Australia by gradually reducing his work hours.

"I had a job that was kind of a shitty job - it paid really well but I didn't like it. My friend asked why I didn't like it, saying 'it's an easy job, we're making great money, they respect us - what's the problem?' I said the problem is if I didn't come here today, nothing would change.

So I started testing this theory. I began with one hour - every day from 1 PM to 2 PM, I would do nothing. Not to be lazy, but to test what happens. Nothing happened. Nobody noticed. Then I took half a day off - nothing happened. I stopped coming to work for 2 weeks - nothing happened. Finally, by the 4th week, they were like 'Hey, what the heck, where are you? We noticed these things were behind.'

It really taught me that one thing that matters to me is that my hours matter. When I do something, I want it to matter. It's not linear - every hour is not equal. We get trained to think Monday through Friday 9-5, assuming Monday equals Thursday, that the first hour equals the fourth hour. But they're definitely not equal in productivity or importance."
