Cultural Isolation Shapes Content

Jimmy (MrBeast) shares a story about his unique upbringing and limited exposure to traditional media and culture.
"Growing up, I only watched YouTube. I didn't listen to music or watch movies, so I was completely out of culture. I still need to go back and watch Star Wars and Harry Potter and all that stuff to get caught up on culture.
I watched Spider-Man 3 but never saw the earlier ones. I did watch Squid Game when we remade it. I watched a ton of anime, but that was about it. Being so out of culture was part of why I was an introvert.
It's funny because back then people were like 'get a life, stop being a nerd, you're too obsessive, you're a weirdo.' And now it's like 'oh wow, he was so obsessive, that's so great.' It went from being a loser nerd who's too obsessive and won't go anywhere to 'damn, that's really inspiring.' It was very hurtful back then, but that's inspiring now.
I like to bring this up because if there are younger people or parents who have kids who are obsessed like this - that's typically what happens. Younger kids don't understand that you're different and don't watch the newest South Park or the newest movie, so you don't talk about the same things. So then people are just like 'oh well, you know, it sucks.'"
